The weather forecast through mobile SMS
 

Introduction: In order To disseminate the weather information including weather forecast to minimize losses in agriculture, Integrated Agromet Advisory Services of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre, Lembucherra and India Meteorological Department, Meteorological Centre, Agartala have jointly started SMS services for farmers of the state on last 30th January 2010. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of the State has inaugurated the service in a Farmers’ Meet at the centre. Farmers may get the location-specific weather forecast five days in advance.

Eligibility: Any citizen who desires to have the service may get the weather forecast through mobile SMS. At present the forecast will be updated twice in a week and will be available at district level. Farmers may send SMS to 9436949600 for the weather forecast.

Time to avail the service: It is a SMS based 24x7 days basis online service
Contact Address: The address will be the address of the sub-registry office nearest to the area of residence of the applicant.

Procedure: Farmers may type FC<location syntax><ddmmyy> going into “Text Message”, leaving no blank and send to 9436949600. The syntax for West Tripura is WST, South Tripura SOU, North Tripura NOR and Dhalai DLI. Syntax with no date will give forecast for specified location for the day. The system will also serve to collect and store location-specific Met data. The registered users may send meteorological data from specific centres through SMS from registered mobile number. The data sent will automatically stored into the system. The system will also automatically generate the average weather for a given period based on the available data. The system will also generate the Forecast Summary. Currently the same summary is being used for preparation of Agromet weather bulletin. The same system will also be used to send Alert for severe weather or insect/ pest attack. The system is designed by the National Informatics Centre, Govt of India, Agartala. The system is so designed that the same may be used for providing block level weather information without much change. At present the forecast will be updated twice in a week and will be available at district level.
